The Montessori Method is a child-centered, educational method based on the child development theories originated by Italian educator Maria Montessori (1870–1952) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Primarily applied in preschool and primary school settings, this method of education is characterised by emphasising self-directed activity on the part of the child, and stresses the importance of adapting a child’s learning environment to his or her developmental level. This system helps the child to develop self confidence, patience and respect for the environment.

A wide range of Montessori materials are used in the classrooms which enable the child’s learning environment to adapt to his or her developmental level. Children of all races, socio-cultural and economic backgrounds have found an irresistible appeal in the Montessori learning materials and continue to do so after nearly a century. Through the use of these materials, which are specific to Montessori schools (sets of letters, blocks and science experiments) children learn to correct their own mistakes instead of relying on a teacher to give them the correct answer.

The function of these materials is, however, of far greater scope. While adults can teach children a limited amount of facts, the knowledge children can acquire, if they are free to follow their inner being, is unlimited. The Montessori educational equipment is self directed in that it provides children with motivation for purposeful activity which is perfectly adapted to each stage of their development.
